The La Jolla Shores Situation

Short Board? Long Board?

This surfing venue is in grave danger, no matter what you ride!

On May 9, 1994 the City Council adopted Resolution number R-283843 in response to"some bodysurfers" to have the swimming only area at La Jolla Shores beach, as controlled by the San Diego City Lifeguards, moved north from tower 22 to tower 23.

We will be forming an active coalition to campaign for not only changing the above resolution to restore surfing to the area between tower 22 and 23, but to designate this area a surfing area. Virtually to a man, the rank and file lifeguards agree with and support this effort, but can themselves do little about it.

Summer '97 had begun with some promising changes, although subtle, to the tower numers, locations and flag placement. Suddenly in the middle of July, we have noticed the flag consistently placed to what appears to be a designated location near the new tower #33. Something appears to have changed within the lifeguard policy, although we are not sure exactly what has happened yet. Until mid-July the lifeguards were posting the flag, as far as we can tell, by their take on the crowd and water conditions. Things seemed to be working well. For no apparent reason the flag is now in a new location no matter what is going on with the ocean. Stay tuned.....
